Traditional vs. Integrative Psychiatry

What is the difference between traditional and integrative psychiatry?

Standard/ traditional psychiatry is based on treating an illness or pathology in mental health. The main method of treatment is evidence based on science with medication and psychotherapy. The goal is to treat a specific diagnosis.

Integrative/ functional psychiatry is based on the treatment of the complex person with the belief that many factors can cause mental illness. The treatment, therefore, is based on the whole person. It uses different treatment modalities including medication, psychotherapy, specific nutritional supplements, mindfulness, and other non-traditional treatment modalities. The goal is the remission of symptoms and the best possible mental wellness for the individual.
